A Perspective on the Global Solar Power Industry from Rooftops
Imagine a world where every building, from government offices and homes to farms, is adorned with solar panels. Given current global trends, this vision is swiftly becoming a reality.
Reuters reported that to meet its renewable energy targets and accommodate growing electricity demands fueled by population growth, the Israeli government has mandated solar panel installation on rooftops of all new commercial buildings. Moreover, the new regulations stipulate that residential buildings must be designed to facilitate future solar panel installations. Ron Eifer, head of the sustainable energy division at Israel’s Ministry of Energy, revealed that approximately 60% of these panels will serve a dual purpose: providing both shade and electricity.
Numerous other nations are embracing renewable energy, with solar power emerging as a highly efficient and cost-effective solution. For instance, Germany’s Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has reported a significant shift towards solar electricity among businesses and households. The German government has set an ambitious goal of sourcing at least 80% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
Similarly, in Malaysia, where prolonged hot weather is driving up electricity bills, businesses and households are increasingly turning to renewable energy. The leadership of Ditrolic Energy has noted a surge in inquiries and installations of solar panels. Datuk Tobeng, CEO of Gading Kencana Sdn Bhd, attributed this trend to growing concerns about escalating electricity costs and highlighted the availability of low-interest loans to encourage solar adoption.
In Japan, the government has been actively promoting residential solar power generation. Approximately 15 years ago, Japan introduced a loan program to support families adopting solar energy during home purchases or renovations. Recently, the Tokyo government mandated that all new residential buildings constructed from April 2025 must utilize renewable energy, primarily solar power, which is expected to significantly boost demand in the city.
The CEO of Gading Kencana Sdn Bhd emphasized that renewable energy offers numerous advantages, including efficiency, safety, and cost savings of up to 30% compared to traditional energy sources, making solar power an attractive investment for many countries.
In the near future, it is conceivable that solar panel installation will become a standard feature in new home designs.
